Educator Slain and 25 Girls Abducted in Armed Clash at Educational Institution in Nigeria
Gun-wielding individuals have taken the life of an instructor and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a educational institution for young women in Nigeria's northwestern region, authorities have confirmed.
The criminal group stormed the public educational institution for female students in Maga, Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, authorities reported.
The assailants "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a shootout" before climbing over the boundary wall and seizing the students from their living quarters, authorities disclosed.
One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now being treated medically.
Observers recounted a large group of attackers, referred to locally as criminal elements, who arrived firing sporadically to generate terror.
Community members told reporters that the gunmen subsequently marched a contingent of young women into adjacent wilderness.
The authorities announced they had sent "additional police tactical units, alongside military personnel and local protection units" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and suspected escape routes.
In the past few years, schools in northern Nigeria have regularly come under attack for weapon-carrying factions, who frequently execute kidnappings to request monetary settlements or gain negotiating power with authorities.
