Individuals Stopping Slimming Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such drugs must be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to original mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural changes.
