The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after recent developments came to light.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the possibility of Bolsonaro's move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of organizing to ask for protection through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The court filing highlights that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which included plans to kill his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, the capital city.

The police intervened and around 1,500 people were detained.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the moment, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
