Gareth Southgate has stated that he is avoiding a return to football management, noting that it would be difficult to match the special mission he felt as England’s manager.

He suggested his intention to focus his energy toward working with young people and countering what he labeled a pervasive negative narrative currently found in the country.

Exploring New Avenues Outside of Coaching

During a broadcast discussion, he was questioned on rumors linking him with vacant management roles in the top flight and abroad.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he responded. “Recreating that unique role won’t be easy. With 37 years in football behind me, I’m excited to identify fresh ways to create impact.”

Dedication to Positive Examples

Leading up to the release of his forthcoming publication, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, the author stated that he is “very passionate” about providing role models for the youth, applying experiences from his tenure as head coach of the national side from 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.

Southgate maintains that his time coaching England, during which the team transformed from being deeply unpopular to widely supported, holds general lessons.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he noted. “The public viewed the players as egotistical, yet we successfully reversed that image. The squad’s ability to connect diverse communities was truly powerful.”

Parenting and Shaping the Next Generation

Speaking from his experience as a father, Southgate observed: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.”

He went on: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”

Unity Over Discord

The former manager stressed that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the cultural focus often centers on division.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he said. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

Southgate’s upcoming publication, Dear England, is scheduled to present deeper reflections on leadership and country pride inspired by his remarkable time in football.
