Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a significant honors show approaches, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
