The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors involved, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
